A CHANGE OF AIR

The art piece consists of a video work and an object - a flag raised on Goli otok (Naked Island), the former most brutal prison in the former Yugoslavia. Miljenka Jantolek, daughter of a former political prisoner, raises a flag carrying the message (Na promjenu zraka) “A Change of Air”. In the early 1950s, the family received a letter with this message notifying them about the location of their uncle. The piece “A Change of Air” originates from the appointment with Professor Vladimir Bobinac’s family. Marking the first anniversary of his death, his daughter raised a flag in his honor at the Mladost Stadium, on Goli otok.
Vladimir Bobinac is known as a history professor and a man who, after his imprisonment, spent the rest of his life engaged in a quiet battle, trying to turn Goli otok into a memorial space with the intention of stopping this, or anything similar, from happening ever again. He reached old age and died, on 5 May 2014, the same day as Josip Broz Tito, the former President of Yugoslavia, during whose presidency the prison was built.
